SPANISH FORK, UTAH, April 19, 2012 (by Karisa Kukuchka): Tons of particles of colored maize painted the sky on March 24 and 25 and April 14 at the annual celebration of Holi. The Hindu temples in Spanish Fork and Salt Lake City that were once white became encrusted with layers of chalk and the handprints of the nearly 80,000 participants of the festival.

Holi, or the Festival of Colors, is a Hindu tradition. It is considered to be the least religious of the faith's traditions, but was originally an agricultural festival. The throwing of the colors into the sky symbolizes the beginning of spring emerging from the bleakness of the winter. This act also symbolizes forgiving all those around you, creating new friendships, and having unity among all.

Students from Juan Diego High School participated in the Holi festival in Spanish Fork. Sophomore Olivia Cella went to the festival for the second year in a row. She believes that despite the rich traditions behind the ceremony, many people who attend the festival have no clue what they are celebrating. "I think they are just there to have fun," said Cella.

LOS ANGELES April 22, 2012 (RNS):
[HPI note: Because this news from Religion News Service is not available on the web, HPI is running it in full.]

Kamna Mittal and her husband moved to the Bay Area soon after they were married in India in 2000. In addition to being in a new country, the couple were new to each other. Their marriage had been arranged.

"When you go for an arranged marriage," she said, "it's a total gamble."

Now a mother of two, Mittal counts herself lucky that it worked out, but 12 years later, she wants to help Indian-American singles in the Bay Area meet directly.

Turns out even love can use a little help every now and then, and the age-old practice of arranged Hindu marriages is getting a 21st-century makeover.

Sapna Thakur, 34, recently moved to the Bay Area and attended Mittal's first mixer in February, a Valentine's Day-themed singles party. "Why not? Give it a shot," she thought before going.

"It was a bit awkward in the beginning but then it was fine because there were a lot of games and people were mingling. I had a nice time."

The marriage process is in flux in Indian-American culture, opening the door to new avenues for matchmaking. Even as singles' attitudes on dating change, Hindu tradition still holds sway through mixers, matrimony websites and matchmakers.

Within Indian culture (which is predominantly Hindu), marriage is as much about families coming together as it is about couples coming together. Hinduism orders families into four major castes and thousands of sub-castes, each with their own particular ritual role or profession. Ideally, a couple must be in the same sub-caste, region and religion. Priests also compare their horoscopes to ensure compatibility.

Especially in Indian villages, matchmaking tends to be informal, using "extensive kinship networks," said Lindsey Harlan, chair of religious studies at Connecticut College. When an Indian gets to a marriageable age, "aunties," who are not necessarily related, start looking out for potential life partners.

A family also might hire a marriage broker to help the process along. These days, matrimony websites can serve the same broker role as the "aunties."

Parents, both in India and in the U.S., create profiles listing their children's personal and familial information -- including caste and religion -- on sites like Bharatmatrimony.com, which has more than 20 million profiles worldwide.

The website's CEO, Murugavel Janakiraman, said 10 percent of clients are immigrants to the U.S. or American-born Indians.

"There have been a lot of more modern inventions trying to achieve the same goal as matchmaking by 'aunties,'" Harlan said. Such inventions, she said, are "a reaction to the fear that kids will make inappropriate choices and suffer the same divorce rates that the (U.S.) does in general."

Parties like Mittal's can serve to either continue or break tradition: Singles might click with somebody outside their caste, or they could meet more of "the kind of people that your parents would like you to marry" than they might in everyday life, Harlan said.

Thakur's parents encouraged her to go the singles party, even though they had wanted to arrange a marriage for her when she was younger. Now that she's older, her father is more open-minded about who his daughter marries -- "but it has to be an Indian," she added, and preferably from one of the higher castes.

Thakur herself is also more open to arranged marriage than she was when she was young.

"When you're working, it's really difficult to meet people," Thakur said. "You go there, you meet someone. You can meet them a few times. It's basically semi-arranged."

Thakur's desire to marry reflects Indians' traditional values at a time when only 51 percent of American adults are wed, according to 2010 Census data.

"It's not like a flirty or just everyday kind of party," Mittal said. "From the girls' side or boys' side, they are both serious about finding a life partner."

Indian immigrants tend to look for the same religion, caste and region, Mittal said. American-born Indians might want somebody who is Indian, preferably raised in America, too. Ninety percent of Hindus in America marry within the faith, according to the U.S. Religious Landscape Survey by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life (
http://religions.pewforum.org/).

"I've seen so much that blows those stereotypes out of the water," said Jasbina Ahluwalia, a Bay Area matchmaker who serves the South Asian community. Still, culture can add a burden to dating.

"Separating one's own priorities and values from expectations of others -- family, parents -- I think can be very challenging," she said.

Even if parents approach her, as they sometimes do, the first consultation must be with the single person, in private. "If someone says,'I want to find another Indian,' I ask why," she said.

Ahluwalia doesn't necessarily advocate a wholesale break with tradition, but clients need to have thought through their answers. If a woman says she wants to marry a Hindu, for instance, Ahluwalia asks what that means: Going to temple each week? Simply being spiritual?

Thakur is willing to look within the parameters set by her parents, but she has her own priorities: physical attraction, education, good employment and stability. She didn't meet anybody she liked at Mittal's party.

"I guess you become more fussy when you get older," she said.

[HPI note: Due to the interest expressed by our readers on this contentious subject, HPI continues to cover relevant developments of the appointment of Nityananda as the next head of Madurai Aadheenam.]

MADURAI, INDIA, May 4, 2012 (The Hindu): The 292nd pontiff of Madurai Aadheenam, Sri Arunagirinatha Gnanasambanda Desikar, filed an affidavit in the Madras High Court Bench here on Thursday refuting allegations that he was under the illegal custody of Nityananda of Bidadi in Karnataka. The pontiff stated that the case had been filed with "imaginary information without verifying essential facts and actual truth."

A petition, filed by M. Solaikannan of Hindu People's Party, alleged that Nityananda had managed to get himself appointed as the 293rd pontiff of Madurai Aadheenam by taking Gnanasambanda Desikar under his illegal custody with the muscle power of "henchmen" brought from Karnataka. He wanted the Court to direct the State government to take control of the Aadheenam by appointing a committee headed by a retired High Court judge.

Gnanasambanda accused the habeas corpus petitioner of filing the case with the intention of gaining publicity. "I have been meeting the devotees every day at my Madurai Aadheenam. I also met all the general public and press people and gave a public statement on May 2 in Madurai in order to clear all unwarranted rumors... But the conduct of the petitioner is insulting, scandalous and motivated by malice. I am fully eligible, empowered and competent to manage, administer and appoint my successor for Madurai Aadheenam."

The pontiff also stated that he had no plans to go abroad as claimed by the petitioner. "The imputations made by the petitioner have brought disgrace and humiliation to the entire Madurai Aadheenam and its devotees. I reserve my right to proceed against the petitioner as per the provisions of both the civil and criminal law," he added.

A Division Bench comprising Justice M. Sathyanarayanan and Justice D. Hariparanthaman adjourned the hearing to Friday and ordered the High Court Registry to post the case along with a public interest litigation petition.

MADURAI, INDIA, May 4 (The HIndu): The Madras High Court on Thursday ordered notice of admission on a writ petition seeking a direction to the State government to forbear Nityananda from acting as the 293rd 'Guru Maha Sannidhanam' of the Madurai Adheenam by holding his appointment as illegal.

A Vacation Bench comprising Justices C.S. Karnan and K. Ravichandra Baabu also ordered that status quo be maintained with regard to the protection of the mutt property.

The petitioner said the appointment of Nityananda was contrary to the letter and spirit of the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act. He was "absolutely incompetent" to hold the post which was being held in reverence all over the world by Saivites. Several criminal cases were pending against him. He had been accused of sexual abuse. Therefore, to safeguard the assets of the adheenam and for the betterment of the Saivite cause, the petitioner said he was constrained to file the petition.

MADURAI, INDIA, May 3, 2012 (India Today): Nityananda has been prepared to fight tooth and nail for his newly acquired crown after heads of 13 Saivite mutts put their heads together in Nagapattinam on Tuesday to finalise their strategy to oppose his appointment as the chief of Madurai Adheenam.

"My devotees will go on an indefinite hunger strike if they don't withdraw their stand and, in the meantime, legal action would be taken against all the 13 head of the mutts acting us," Nityananda said on Wednesday threatening that he would write a letter in blood to the Tamil Nadu government. "We have branches across the world. Nearly 12 million devotees are with my organization."

Priest Ooran Adigal said, "If Adheenam sticks to this decision, we will be forced to seek legal recourse besides requesting for the intervention of Tamil Nadu government."

Madurai pontiff Gnanasambanda said, "We discussed with other mutt heads before appointing Nityananda as head of the mutt. They agreed. Now if they oppose, we will take legal steps against persons opposing it."

Fight to control Madurai mutt The Madurai Adheenam is 1,500 years old and close to the power centre in Tamil Nadu. The powerful mutt has property worth more than Rs.1,200 crore. Its assets comprise more than 1,250 acre land, several temples and properties in India and abroad.

INDIA, April 29, 2012 (India Times): A double polythene packet might not seem to be the way we would want to send our loved ones out of this world. But then again, this is a double polythene packet that is placed inside a cloth bag, which goes in a plastic box that's given to a courier who delivers it to Kashi Moksha Incorporated, which has an office in Nandan Sahu Lane near Varanasi's Manikarnika Ghat, where it is said that the fires from cremations of devout Hindus have not gone cold in centuries.

Jata Shankar Dwivedi, who is giving the instructions about how to send the ashes of the departed, set up Kashi Moksha Inc. as a one-stop shop for all Varanasi cremation related services. Dwivedi, who claims links to the Raja Guru of Nepal's royal family, says he has customers from across India, and also from the US, South Africa and Canada. He charges in the range of US$20 to $200, with extras for special needs and rituals.

He explains that along with the remains, out-of-station customers must send an authorization letter from the son or daughter of the deceased. "Once we receive the remains of the deceased, five acharyas perform the ritual of asthi visarjan and shraadh at the banks of Ganga amidst chanting of holy mantras. We can also make a mobile call from the place the last rituals are held and take sankalp from the son of the deceased."

The key point to note, says Dwivedi, is "We video record all related moments, right from receiving the courier to holding the rituals till the Brahmin bhojan - free food to Brahmins. A CD is sent to the customer so that he can personally see how the rituals were conducted."

TAMIL NADU, INDIA, April 2012 (The Hindu): About a dozen Pallipadai temples, mausoleums of Maratha kings and queens who ruled Thanjavur for 175 years, are in a shambles in the historic town.

Located at Raja Ghori, the temples, built to perpetuate the glory of the rulers, today stand as symbols of neglect and decay. A classic case is the temple of Pratapa Simhan, which is characterised by broken pillars and weeds. Pratapa Simhan was the king of Thanjavur from 1740 to 1764 AD.

N. Selvaraj, president of the Centre for Historic Research, Ayyampettai here, who carried out research and identified the Pallipadai temple of Pratapa Simhan, says 11 Maratha kings ruled Thanjavur between 17th Century A.D. and 19th Century A.D.

Aesthetically constructed, the Pratapa Simhan temple stands on a 10-foot foundation made of bricks and stones. With a 50-foot-high vimana (tower), the temple has a mandapam, pillars and shrines for Lord Shiva and Goddess Amman. In its vicinity are the temples of Shivaji II, the last Maratha King (1832-1855), and 11 queens of the Maratha dynasty in one complex, which too is in a state of ruin.

Today, the area around the temples has been taken over by people who have built houses. The land still remains private property and is with Babaji Rajah Bhonsle, senior prince of Thanjavur, a descendant of the Maratha dynasty. He is willing to hand it over to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) or the State Archaeology Department for renovating the temples and making them heritage sites.

MADURAI, INDIA, April 30, 2012 (IBN Live): Tension prevailed at the Madurai Aadheenam here on Sunday after members of a Hindu outfit entered into a heated argument with supporters of Nityananda over the legitimacy of appointing the controversial leader as the 293rd pontiff of the mutt.

"I was a bit reluctant to accept the responsibility because of the controversy surrounding me, but Arunagirinatha gave me the confidence. I will run the mutt as per his advice," said Nityananda. He also said that 50 members from his ashram would soon visit the Madurai Aadheenam to manage the mutt and he would also open free schools in the district.

Members of the Hindu Makkal Katchi, led by Arjun Sampath, also staged a protest condemning Nityananda's appointment and demanded that the government intervene and safeguard the glory of the ancient mutt. Hindu Makkal Katchi leader Arjun Sampath and others demanded talks with the Aadheenakartar, Arunagirinatha, in connection with the appointment of Nityananda as pontiff. Arunagirintha reportedly refused to meet anyone but later, six members, including Sandikeswarar Narpani Mandram leader Suresh Babu, were allowed to meet him.

While Arunagirintha defended the appointment, supporters of Nityananda raised slogans in praise of him. Outraged by this, Hindu outfit members raised slogan against Nityananda. Police then pacified the agitators and brought them out of the mutt.

[HPI note: As requested by readers who contacted us, HPI today brings you extensive coverage of the succession at Madurai Aadheenam.]

RAMANAGARA, INDIA, April 27, 2012 (One India): Disgraced religious leader Nityananda, who is facing criminal cases, was declared 293rd pontiff of "Madurai Aadheenam", an ancient Hindu religious organisation. He was declared the 293rd pontiff by Arunagirinatha Sri Gnanasambanda Desika Paramacharya Swamigal, the 292nd pontiff of the Aadheenam.

"We hereby coronate him with the title His Holiness the 293rd Guru Maha Sannidhanam Srila Sri Paramahamsa Nityananda Sri Gnanasambanda Desika Paramacharya Swamigal", he told reporters.

He also declared Nityananda as his lawful successor to deal with all movable and immovable properties of the Adheenam, which includes over 1250 acres of land, several temples and properties in India and abroad.

The Madurai Aadheenam has existed since time immemorial. However, it was revived around 1500 years ago by Tirujnana Sambandar, one of the four visionary saints of South Indian Shaiva Siddhanta philosophy. The Aadheenam's history dates to the Tamil Sangam period. The presiding deities of Madurai are Shiva and Devi in their incarnations as Chokkanathar and Meenakshi, enshrined in the famous Madurai Meenakshi-Sundareshwara temple.

Nityananda vowed to fulfill all responsibilities of the Aadheenam, revive the Shaiva tradition and also make the Aadheenam an international religious organisation.

Nityananda had landed in controversy after a video footage showing him in intimate contact with an actress was telecast by local TV channels in March 2010. He was arrested on April 21, 2010 from Solan in Himachal Pradesh, under other charges. He was granted bail on June 11, 2010 by Karnataka High Court, and fled to America.

MADURAI, INDIA, April 30, 2012 (Times of India): Pontiff of the millennium-old Madurai Adheenam, Arunagirinatha Desikar has defended the nomination of Nityananda as the 293rd pontiff of the ancient mutt in Madurai, stating that it was a well thought out decision for the welfare and growth of the mutt.

"The charges against Nityananda are false and those levelling allegations against him are ignorant," said the pontiff at a press conference here on Sunday even as an angry group of activists from Hindu outfits staged a protest outside the mutt against Nityananda. Desikar also brushed aside protests against the nomination of Nityananda as the successor stating that neither the government nor Hindu outfits could interfere in the appointment of a successor.

"I was looking out for a successor for the Adheenam for the past eight years. In this backdrop I visited the Nityananda Dhyanapeedam in Bidadi near Bangalore. The moment I saw Nityananda, a divine voice told me that Nityananda was the right person. I spoke to Nityananda in this regard. He hesitated due to the allegations levelled against him. But I convinced him as the Adheenam needs an individual with spiritual and administrative skills as well as a fighting spirit," Desikar told reporters.

MADURAI, INDIA, April 30, 2012 (Indian Express): Tension prevailed at Madurai Adheenam (Mutt) here, one of the oldest Saivite mutts in the country, as Hindu outfits staged a protest against the appointment of self-styled godman Nityananda as its 293rd pontiff.

Hindu Makkal Katchi said the police allowed only six persons in to see the mutt heads.Though they wanted to meet the senior pontiff alone, they were denied permission and told to talk to them in the presence of 200 disciples, HMK state president Arjun Sampath said.

Sampath said the mutt had set a wrong precedent by announcing the new head without consulting disciples and heads of other mutts. Nityananda should have been appointed after being cleared of the charges against him, he said. Hindu Munnani said the present pointiff was appointed after being trained in religious rituals for four years.

VHP leader P Somasundaram said it was for the senior pontiff to establish if he had taken the correct decision. Nityananda, who formally took over on Sunday, later alleged that those using "defamatory terms" against him were out to "destroy" him. On the agitations by Hindu outfits, he said they had not understood him properly. The senior pontiff defended his decision, saying it was his prerogative to choose his successor. Nityanandha is the first person outside Saiva Velalar community to be appointed Mutt chief.

BELADU, BALI, May 9, 2012 (The Jakarta Post): Thousands of Balinese Hindu devotees and tourists are expected to flock into the historical Samuantiga temple in Bedulu, Gianyar, where the Siyat Sampian ritualistic battle will be held today from early morning until around 1:00 p.m.

Samuantiga occupies an important place in the history of Balinese Hinduism. In the 11th century, the great sage and royal advisor Mpu Kuturan invited the influential leaders of Hindu's nine competing sects for a decisive meeting at the temple. It was said that the rivalry among these sects had nearly thrown the island into a religious war. The meeting resulted in an agreement to amalgamate all the sects into one unified body of philosophical teaching: Balinese Hinduism as we now know it.

The Siyat Sampian is the climax of the temple's major anniversary ritual. It commences in the morning with the Nampyog ritual, during which a host of elderly female devotees slowly march encircling the temple's spacious inner and outer courtyard 18 times. Last year, it took them two hours to complete the ritual, a magnificent achievement for elderly dancers who had woken up at dawn and prayed at six different temples before performing at Samuantiga.

INDIA, April 2012 (dw.de): For centuries, the Bishnoi have sworn by the preservation of plants and animals. Some have even lost their lives to defend this cause. The "eco-religion" was founded in the 15th century, when a farmer, who is now known as Guru Jambheshwar, retreated after a long drought and formulated 29 tenets according to which the farmers of the Thar Desert region should live their lives.

The word bis means 20, whereas noi means nine. The tenets revolve around personal hygiene, basic health, social behavior, the worship of God, biodiversity and good animal husbandry. They include a ban on the felling of green trees.

"The Bishnoi are a caste within the Hindu caste system," explains Dr Pankaj Jain from the University of Texas. "They are strict vegetarians and do not kill living beings. Nature is holy to them."

However, the lives of the half million or so Bishnois who live in India's western state of Rajasthan are currently under threat. The hundreds of small and medium-sized textile companies in the city of Jodhpur have polluted the Loni River, which is essential for keeping the sacred forest of Khejarli green and allowing the wild animals that are central to the Bishnois' beliefs to graze.

"Nothing grows here anymore," complains Balaram Bishnoi, a farmer from the village of Doli. "The land is dead. I had vegetables, crops and sesame - all kinds of things. Now not even grass grows anymore. The land has dried out completely." He and several other farmers have filed a suit against the region's textile industry and are currently awaiting a verdict.

Two centuries ago, at least 364 Bishnois died trying to protect the trees of Khrejarli. Shivdas Shastri, the village priest, relates the story: "Some 200 years ago, the king ordered the forest to be cleared to build a palace. When the king's men came to fell the trees, the Bishnoi from the surrounding villages protested. 'We will die, but we won't allow the trees to be felled,' they shouted."

Religion News Service

WASHINGTON, April 2012 (RNS): A new White House report that offers guidance on public/private partnerships between the government and faith-based groups leaves critical questions unanswered and does not resolve the issue of religious groups' ability to discriminate in hiring and firing, church-state watchdogs said.

The 50-page report, issued Friday (April 28), comes 18 months after President Obama issued an executive order calling for more transparency as faith-based groups work with the government to meet social needs.

The report breaks little new ground, but reaffirms that:

A faith-based organization can provide federally funded social services without removing religious art, scriptures and symbols from their facilities.
Explicitly religious activities can't be supported by federal funds but are permitted if they are funded privately and occur at a separate time and location from programs that receive government money.
Beneficiaries who object to the religious character of a provider must be referred promptly to an alternative.

Joshua DuBois, director of the White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships, called the guidance "an important step" in implementing the recommendations from a blue-ribbon advisory board. "A diverse group of faith and nonprofit leaders proposed ways to strengthen the government's relationship with faith-based organizations in a manner that protects religious liberty and the separation of church and state, and we are glad to move these recommendations forward," he said.

The report includes detailed examples on separating federally funded programs from privately funded religious activities, including distinct web pages and careful reporting of travel and use of electronic equipment.

Rabbi David Saperstein, who directs the Washington office of the Union for Reform Judaism and served on the advisory council, said the new guidance is "a great step forward," but he and others remain unsatisfied with the administration's apparent silence on addressing the ability of federally funded organizations to discriminate on the basis of religion when hiring or firing staff.

The White House has previously said the issue would be handled on a case-by-case basis and has resisted finalizing any formal policy. "We do hope that the president will move expeditiously to ensure that no one is discriminated against when it comes to hiring with tax dollars," Saperstein said.

The Rev. Barry Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, also welcomed the report's safeguards, but said loopholes remain. "This guidance makes some significant improvements to the Bush faith-based initiative, but it falls far short of what it ought to do," said Lynn, who served on a reform task force for DuBois' office. "A fundamentalist Christian church can still run a publicly funded social service program and hang out a sign that says, "Government job opening: No Catholics, Jews, Muslims or Atheists need apply.

The report includes a true-and-false questionnaire to train individuals working most closely with programs at the intersection of government and religion. Among its statements:

"Recipients of federal funds, including State and local governments, cannot discriminate in the provision of program services on the basis of religion." (True.)

"There is no money set aside by the Federal government for faith-based organizations to receive a designated portion of awards in Federal social services." (True.)

"Federal funds can be used to buy religious materials as long as the materials are used in a social service program serving the needy. (False.)

SRINAGAR, INDIA, May 1, 2012 (ibn live): The Meteorological Department will establish three advanced warning systems (AWS) at Amarnath holy cave, Pahalgam and Baltal base camps to ensure better forecast of weather conditions for the smooth conduct of Amarnath Yatra this year, a spokesman of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) said after a high level meeting.

The establishment of AWS will provide a better and accurate prediction of likely weather on a given date, the spokesman said. He said the Met Department has also decided to install a weather display board at the Nunwan Base Camp as well as at Baltal Base Camp for the benefit of Yatris. "It was also decided that the Meteorological Department will provide instant warning regarding any
weather-related disturbances to all authorities concerned through SMS service", he added.

Met Department Director Sonam Lotus, who attended the meeting, said the Department is in the process of establishing Doppler Radar at Srinagar for which the procurement process is at an advanced stage. "Once established, this will provide a huge facility for more accurate weather prediction in the Kashmir valley. This will benefit not only the Yatra but also the general public in Kashmir Valley throughout the year", Lotus said.

Press Release

PITTSBURGH, PA, USA, March 3, 2012 (Press Release, full report): Over 32 Pandits and 40 adult and youth delegates representing more than 20 Mandirs (Temples) and Hindu organizations, from across the county, participated in the First annual Hindu Mandir Pandits' (Priest) Conference (HMPC), from April 27th through 28th, 2012 in Pittsburgh, PA. The Theme of the conference was 'Role of Pandits in Sustaining Dharma in America'.

The conference began with group chanting of Ganesh Atharvashirsha by all the Pandits. The praasaad (hall) of Hindu Jain Temple was filled with divine vibrations. Krishna Sharma, Chairperson of HJT and GG Hegde, Chairperson of SVT welcomed all the delegates. In his opening remarks Pandit Suresh Joshi of HJT said, "I welcome all the delegates who are working towards sustenance of Dharma through Mandirs." In his keynote address on elevating the profile of Pandits', Pandit Roopnauth Sharma of Canada said, "The mandir belongs to the people (devotees) who come to the mandir." He proposed to accomplish this by making the Pandit a key figure in the sustaining of spiritual and cultural element of North American Hindu society and providing the infrastructure and opportunities for personal development and growth of the Pandits within the organization and community. He stressed on the important role that the Pandit has as a performer of religious functions, as a teacher/counselor, as a mandir executive and as a community leader. "We must collectively define a career path and opportunity for growth for the Pandits in North America."

Sessions included a variety of topics relevant to the Mandirs, Pandits and Youth - tomorrow's torchbearers of Sanatana Dharma. Topics included 'Pandit Adjustment, Growth and Development', 'Serving the Youth and Young Couples', 'Compensation, Benefits, Housing, Long-Term Service Issues'.

Bhakti Mehta of Coalition of Hindu Youth (CHY) and Harishwer Balasubramani of SV Temple youth group jointly said, "Having a level of comfort between Pandits and youth will create a home in our mandirs." During his speech Pandit Ram Hardowar of NY drew applause by quoting, "In Hindu dharma we don't have GOD. We have BRAHMAN, we have ISHWAR. Let us use the words that have a meaning for us." Paramacharya Sadasivanatha Palaniswami of Kauai's Hindu Monastery (Hinduism Today) presented the Hindu Jain Temple youth group with rudraksha beads to plant them on temple ground. Pandit Murali Bhattar of MN demonstrated his iPad and highlighted the role of technology in Pandits' duties.

In her parting thoughts, Swamini Svatmavidyananda of Arshavidya Gurukul said, "Doctors and healers, for example, cannot say that they have clients, and neither can teachers. Likewise, the priests also do not have customers. Themselves being in service of Ishvara, they serve other devotees." She added, "In the North American context, the priests face certain unique challenges of negotiating linguistic and cultural barriers. To address these issues, my guru, Pujya Sri Swami Dayanandaji has planned a priests' training course at the Hindu University of America in Orlando, Florida."

In the concluding session of the conference, delegates agreed on two resolutions:

  • Form a Hindu Mandir Pandit Sabha (a think tank) to enhance to facilitate communications and knowledge exchange.
  • Formulate an exchange program for Pandits to observe and learn from Operation and Spiritual activities of other Temples.

In the end Pandit Venkatacharyulu of Sri Venkateswara Temple and Mahendra Bhalakia of Hindu Jain Temple thanked all the delegates, volunteers and the organizers for a wonderful first ever Hindu Mandir Pandits' (Priest) Conference (HMPC) in the USA.

Desire is a very dangerous thing. Sometimes we think we have killed all selfish desire, but somewhere in our mind there lingers some remnant; and as from a spark left in the corner of the hearth may come again a big fire, so out of that small remnant may spring a huge fire of desire.

[HPI note: This is relevant as a report of the government taking over temple facilities for administrative and bureaucratic purposes. Only Hindu houses of worship are subject to intervention in India, where all other faiths are free to manage their affairs.]

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, INDIA, May 1, 2012 (The Hindu): Tense scenes were witnessed near the Sreekanteshwaram temple on Monday after the activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party and some Hindu organisations blocked the officials of the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) who had arrived at the temple for the inauguration of the counting station of the centralized counting system of temple offering box donations (kanikka).

The protesters blocked the TDB officials, including president M. Rajagopalan Nair and commissioner N. Vasu, in protest against the move to convert the temple wedding and annadanam hall into a permanent counting station of TDB.

The protesters said that the hall should not be converted into a counting station as it was the only facility available in the temple for conducting 'Annadanam' (mass feeding) during special occasions.

"Annadanam is an important part of most festivals when free food is provided to devotees. Many people from the weaker sections of society benefit from this. If there is no space to conduct 'Annadanam' on the temple premises, then it will become a deterrent for the organizers," said BJP leader and Palkulangara councillor P. Ashok Kumar.

Following the protest, which went on for a few hours, TDB officials consented to construct a separate facility for organizing 'Annadanam' on the temple premises within three months.

"Centralized counting of kannika is a new initiative of TDB and a pilot project is being introduced in the district. We made it clear that this hall will be required as counting station. But we will definitely construct a new facility for Annadanam within three months," commisioner Mr Vasu said.

UTTARAKHAND, INDIA, May 3,2012 (India Today): Heavy snowfall has badly affected the annual pilgrimage to Kedarnath this year in Uttarakhand. The portals of this famous Hindu shrine, located in Rudraprayag, were opened for visitors on April 28. But it's been snowing in Kedarnath ever since, creating problem for the local administration.

Situated at an altitude of 3,581 metres, the Kedarnath shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Gaurikund is the last road head and after that one has to undertake a tough 14 kilometre trek to reach the shrine.

Bad weather has played spoilsport and the chopper service to Kedarnath is yet to start. The district administration is finding it tough to make the drinking water pipeline functional and to restore electricity as well as telephone lines. Daily snowfall has hit the basic amenities hard in the area. At present Kedarnath is facing an acute crisis of kerosene.

The death of five pilgrims, due to extreme cold, has forced the local administration to conduct mandatory medical tests on all elderly people undertaking the 14 km trek. Besides, visitors are not allowed to move from Gaurikund to Kedarnath after 2 pm.

USA, May 4, 2012 (NY Times): [HPI note: This is a long piece about how McDonalds slowly reversed its negative image of the world's largest seller of unhealthy food. Read the whole article at the source, above. The core of it is summarized below.]

The company's bottom-line success in recent years has been unmatched by its traditional burger-chain competitors. McDonald's has been growing steadily. Last year, sales nearly doubled the industry's projected growth rate.

Advertising no doubt has something to do with all this success. The company's annual advertising budget has been estimated to exceed $2 billion -- making it "unmatched in the industry," according to BMO Capital Markets, and roughly the size of the gross domestic product of Aruba. That allows McDonald's to reach an audience far larger than the one that saw "Super Size Me."

Executives believe that it is not about simply offering better food, but changing the whole eating experience. Restaurants have been revamped to look more inviting.

Persuasion is at least as important as cooking. The goal, according to Neil Golden, the company's chief marketing officer for its American restaurants, is to win over the holdouts. One way to do that is by improving the food itself. Another way is to change how we think about that food. He said, "We believe that there are more people that would want to come -- if they could feel better about the product."

In the last year alone, nuns in Philadelphia, Seventh-day Adventists in California, doctors in Chicago and activists in Boston have warred with McDonald's over its menu, its marketing, its mission or all of the above. Critics say McDonald's minimizes its role in America's obesity epidemic while continuing to market its food to children through Happy Meals. More recently, the presence in McDonald's hamburgers of "pink slime" -- beef scraps turned into a paste and treated with an ammonia solution -- became a cause celebre. (McDonald's reported in January that it discontinued using pink slime last summer.) And later this month at this year's annual meeting, activists will get shareholders to vote on a proposal that would require the company to respond to the growing evidence linking fast food to obesity and other diseases.

It is the unique and all-encompassing nature of Hinduism that one devotee may be worshiping Ganesha while his friend worships Subramaniam or Vishnu, and yet both honor the other's choice and feel no sense of conflict. The profound understanding and universal acceptance that are unique in Hinduism are reflected in this faculty for accommodating different approaches to the Divine, allowing for different names and forms of God to be worshiped side by side within the temple walls.

MADURAI, INDIA, May 3, 2012 (The HIndu): The celestial wedding of Goddess Meenakshi with Lord Sundareswarar was held at the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple in the city on Wednesday. Witnessed by thousands of devotees and amidst chanting of hymns, the 'tirukkalyanam' (celestial wedding) was performed for the Deities.

The Deities of the Tirupparankundram Temple -- Lord Subramaniaswamy and Lord Pavalakkanivai Perumal -- were brought to the venue to witness the event. Murtis of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar and Piriyavidai occupied the centre stage at the Tiruppugazh mandapam.

Devotees began making a beeline for the venue several hours before the wedding. All the Deities were brought to the decorated dais, which was located at the junction of North and West Adi Streets inside the temple. After the initial rituals, representatives of the Deities, Ramesh Bhattar for Goddess Meenakshi and Senthil Bhattar for Lord Sundareswarar, exchanged garlands.

The wedding took place at 9.40 a.m. A salient feature of the celestial wedding was the installation of a 100-tonne air-conditioner, which drew immense praise from devotees as it provided a welcome respite from the scorching summer heat. The Madurai station of All India Radio relayed a live commentary of the celestial wedding. The event was also telecast live by local cable television channels besides a prominent private channel.

A number of foreign tourists were also brought to the venue by the Tourism Department. The event was watched online by over 2,500 devotees from the U.S., U.K, U.A.E, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Turkey and Finland.

INDIA, April 28, 2012 (India Today): The Indian system is fair and best in the world when it comes to acknowledging the contribution of women, India's top diplomat to the U.S. has said.

This is amply demonstrated in the very fact she being a women rose to be the highest position in Indian diplomacy, Indian Ambassador to the U.S. Nirupama Rao told students of the University of Florida in her Commencement Address.

"In the years since when I came to be a diplomat, the impact that women have on public life in India has also grown from strength to strength. For example, I was privileged to head India's Foreign Service as the Foreign Secretary for two years from 2009 to 2011. It was a unique experience in every way," she said.

Diplomacy, the field to which she belongs, Rao said was for long the exclusive preserve of men and this was very evident when she became a Foreign Service officer in 1973. "Of course, the fact that we had a woman Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi at the time, was a revolutionary development not only for India, but for the world. It made our ascent as women much more acceptable to society, at large," Rao said.

Religion News Service

WASHINGTON, MAY 2012 (RNS): One of the biggest growth areas in political activism around religion is coming from an unlikely source: the nonreligious. The Secular Coalition for America, an umbrella organization that represents 11 nontheistic groups including American Atheists and the American Humanist Association, is looking to take its secular-based activism out of the nation's capital and into the states.

Beginning in June, the Washington-based SCA will install directors in 18 states including Hawaii, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Alabama. State directors will meet with local politicians and train and mobilize local nontheists to lobby on behalf of secular issues and causes.

Activists say the most important policies that affect nonbelievers don't come from Washington. "The majority of erosion to church-state separation is at the local level," said Serah Blain, the SCA's first state director, appointed in Arizona in January. "It's in city councils and school boards and statehouses. And that's where these things really affect people's lives, with laws on bullying and abortion and access to health care. And they are passing without much opposition because it isn't seen as glamorous to lobby locally."

The announcement is the latest indication that nontheists -- atheists, humanists, skeptics and others who hold no supernatural beliefs -- are working to become a political force in their own right. Amanda Knief, who recently joined American Atheists after working as the SCA's government relations manager, said nontheists must "show elected officials that we are a political movement that needs to be recognized. That kind of recognition has been lacking because it is not politically savvy. So we need to show them that we are there and that we count."

NRITYAGRAM, INDIA, March 3, 2012 (New York Times): Movement has long pervaded Indian thought. Dance here is a vivid element in religion, mythology, philosophy and art. Although I have spent over 35 years following dance in the West, a four-week visit to India in February made me feel that only now have I witnessed dance where it is truly central to culture.

Nowhere more so than in the disciplined utopia of Nrityagram, a village far from the madding crowd that is completely given over to the pursuit of dance. The village's company, the Nrityagram Dance Ensemble, is a lustrous exemplar of Odissi, one of India's classical dance forms. Ever since Nrityagram's first New York season in 1996 at the Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College, no Indian dancers have been better known in America. I stayed in this village for four days, observing round-the-clock rehearsals and classes as the company prepared for its latest tour, which on Tuesday brings it to the Joyce Theater for six days.

The road to Nrityagram is an hour's drive west from Bangalore in the state of Karnataka. In this temperate hill country the dancers and musicians (there is also a writers' colony) are used to working in studios open to the air without doors or windows; their buildings are surrounded by thrilling birdsong and flowering vegetation.

Nrityagram was founded in 1990 as a gurukul, or residential village of learning, by the actress Protima Bedi. Though she died in 1998, her name is constantly invoked here. Her vivid personality and love affairs were one part of her legend, but another was her commitment to Indian classical dance, and in particular Odissi, of which she became by all accounts a compelling exponent. In essence Nrityagram remains as she had hoped: an idyllic place where it is not unusual for people to dance -- usually with live musicians -- morning, noon, and night.

WISCONSIN, U.S., May 4, 2012 (Post Crescent): Hinduism is the world's third largest religion, yet before November, Wisconsin only had two Hindu temples. But there's a new worship space that has joined the mix in Kaukauna.

The Hindu Temple of Northeast Wisconsin purchased a 7,000-square-foot building in November for $505,000. Although the building, which sits on four acres of land, is in prime condition, some remodeling is needed to make it more usable as a worship space, including adding a commercial kitchen and a play area for children.

The Hindu Temple of Northeast Wisconsin joins the Hindu Temple of Wisconsin in Pewaukee and the Hindu Temple of Madison, according to Dr. Ram Turlapati, chairman of the temple's board of directors.

More than 600 people currently attend the temple, coming from as far away as Rhinelander, Marinette, Fond du Lac and Wausau. The community also attracts another 400 or so people who come to the Fox Valley from India to consult at area firms, staying six months to a year.

INDIA, April 30, 2012 (First Post): "Hindus are like a fish out of water in Pakistan. They all want to come to India, hoping to put an end to their misery - but it is a different story here altogether," says Krishan Lal, who is one of a group of 145 Hindus who fled Pakistan on a pilgrimage visa. He now lives in a refugee camp in North Delhi, praying that the Indian government will offer him permanent refuge.

The Hindu minority, under siege in Pakistan, especially from abductions, rapes, and forcible conversion of their women, is increasingly desperate to get out. The usual trickle of refugees has grown rapidly in the last year. Until mid-2011, 8-10 families crossed the border; that number has now increased to 400.

Even this number, however, is artificially low, kept down by stringent Indian visa regulations, especially after the 2009 Mumbai attack. Only one in five visa applications are approved.

Those lucky enough to cross the border are shoved into refugee camps, where they languish without rights or attention in a "no man's land." The Indian government treats them as an inconvenience that is best ignored. Take, for instance, Pujari Lal who fled in 1999 after his teenage sister was kidnapped and raped. He now lives in Khanna, Punjab, in a settlement with 1,200 other Hindu and Sikh refugees.

HYDERABAD, INDIA, MAY 2, 2012 (India Today): SR Congress president Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy's religious slant once again sparked a big controversy on Wednesday when he entered the famous Hindu temple of Lord Venkateshwara in Tirumala without signing the mandatory declaration about his faith in the Deity.

Jagan, a Christian, along with his 60 followers, including former Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) trust board chairman Bhumana Karunakara Reddy, entered the temple through the Vaikuntham queue complex to have a VIP break darshan of Lord Venkateshwara.

TTD executive officer L. V. Subrahmanyam, who ordered an inquiry into the incident following complaints by several devotees, said as per the rules, it was mandatory on the part of non-Hindus to sign a formal declaration for the darshan of Lord Venkateshwara saying they had complete faith in the Lord. Jagan, being a born Catholic Christian, should have signed the declaration form.

ACHNERA, UTTAR PRADESH, April 28, 2012 (Newstrack India): A Hindu temple in this small, bustling town on the outskirts of Agra is making a record of sorts with the continuous recital of the Indian epic Ramayana for the past 18 years.

The Ram Hanuman temple opposite the Achnera railway station, about 15 miles from Agra, has become a major centre of attraction for locals and those visiting the town. The recital of the holy book since 1994 is a feat every resident of this town is proud of.

The 'akhand paath' or continuous recital started October 21, 1994, and since then the Ramayana has been recited more than 3,440 times, the temple priest claims. The temple is located on the Uttar Pradesh-Rajasthan border. He says there has never been a shortage of 'pathaks' or readers. 'They consider it a privilege to volunteer their services...there is some invisible force that sustains the enthusiasm of people.'

ALLEN, TEXAS, April 26, 2012 (Pegasus News): Women converged on the Baitul Ikraam Mosque in Allen on Sunday for an interfaith symposium. The objective of the event was to bring women of all faiths together to engage in meaningful dialogues and create a mutual understanding of one another's beliefs, said Saima Sheikh, media secretary for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Women's Association, Dallas chapter, which coordinated the event.

"We believe that interfaith dialogue is the best way for us to focus on the similarities between different faiths instead of focusing on the differences," " Sheikh said. Representatives from the Jewish, Christian, Hindu and Muslim faiths spoke at the women-only event.

The local Sri Ganesha Temple (in Plano, TX) was built in 2006 to serve the growing Hindu population. According to a March 12, 2006 story in Hinduism Today, the Hindu population in Collin County at that time was close to 10,000.

"The need was there. There was a common goal, preserve and promote the values, ideals, culture and philosophy of Hinduism," stated Giridhara Gopal, a member of the working committee for the temple, in the article.

Nikita Hattangady of McKinney represented local Hinduism at the symposium and said she wished more people would take the time to learn about Hindu beliefs before making assumptions. With four Hindu temples in Plano today and many other temples in surrounding areas, Hattangady said the population continues to grow, as she estimated there are probably around 80,000 Hindus living in the DFW area.

CHENNAI, INDIA, May, 2012 (Deccan Chronicle): The state government has initiated steps to identify and restore temple lands whose rights were wrongly issued to private individuals.

"The pattas (registrations) of 468.87 acres of temple lands belonging to 107 temples that were erroneously transferred on to the names of private persons was restored in the names of temples," says a policy note on the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment (HR & CE) department tabled by its minister M.S.M. Anandan, in the Assembly on Tuesday.

All these errors came to light while updating temple registry. During 2011-12, pattas for 167.48 acres of lands belonging to 8 temples were restored. Also, about 119.71 acres of encroached lands have been retrieved.

[HPI note: During the time of the British rule, enormous swaths of land near Chidambaram temple, legally registered as belonging to "Nataraja," were claimed by people whose given name was Nataraja. In spite of protests, the British did not stop the slow misappropriation of the temple's possessions.]

US, May 17, 2012 (HuffPost): Faced with the highest army suicide rates in at least 30 years, U.S. military officials are examining ways to help treat psychologically wounded soldiers. A small 2012 study published in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy found yoga reduced symptoms of combat stress and PTSD. The study was conducted among U.S. active duty military personnel deployed in Iraq.

U.S. researchers administered nine sessions of the "Yoga Warrior method" to 35 U.S. air force and army personnel for three weeks, and this group was compared to another group of 35 personnel who did not receive any therapy. Tests assessing emotional responses and daily journals were obtained from the participants.

The Yoga Warrior method, developed by yoga and occupational therapists, includes hatha yoga and sensory-based occupational therapy techniques.

The researchers found the yoga group had significantly greater improvement in mental health and quality of life than the control group. Furthermore, the yoga participants reported sleep improvement, increased feelings of calm, and reduced anger. "The results support using sensory-enhanced hatha yoga for proactive combat stress management," the study authors conclude.

A very small pilot study conducted at Walter Reed Army Medical Center reports that yoga nidra relieved PTSD symptoms in soldiers returning home from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Integrative Restoration (iREST) program was created by Dr. Richard Miller, a clinical psychologist and co-founder of the International Association of Yoga Therapists and the Institute for Spirituality and Psychology. Yoga nidra, also known as yogic sleep, is a meditative practice that brings calmness and deep relaxation.

The researchers found that PTSD symptoms including anxiety decreased and feelings of being in control increased among the participants.

"As a result of these findings, Walter Reed Health Deployment Clinical Center has integrated Yoga Nidra protocol (now called 'Integrative Restoration, or iRest) into its treatment program for soldiers rotating through the Clinical Center," the study authors write. "Soldiers receive 12 iRest sessions during their three-week rotation through the clinic."

SRINAGAR, INDIA, May 22, 2012 (Outlook India): Inclement weather and fresh snowing in upper reaches for the past week are proving to be major hurdles in track clearance works and in making other arrangements for the annual Amarnath Yatra to the holy cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas.

"The weather this year is following a very highly unusual pattern. After the record snowfall during the winter, it was expected that weather would clear allowing the work to start on clearing tracks and in making arrangements at base camps well in time for the Yatra," Chief Executive Officer N K Choudhary told the meeting.

"Even yesterday, there was snowfall on the entire Yatra route. Unexpectedly, some two to three inches snow fell at Baltal base camp," Choudhary said.

The Governor directed the CEO and all engineering personnel to prepare a contingency plan for clearance of the Yatra tracks, an SASB spokesman said.

INDIA, May 2012 (The Hindu): The Karnataka State Muzrai Temple Priests, Agamikas and Employees' Association has demanded salary to its 100,000 members on a par with the Group D employees and adequate funds to maintain the temples, as they had been forced into penury following transfer of temple land to the tillers under the Karnataka Land Reforms Act.

Association president Srivatsa and vice-president Guruji Ramaswamy Devishree said thousands of acres of fertile land owned by over 36,000 Muzrai temples in the State was taken over by the government and given to the tillers during the D. Devaraj Urs regime, depriving the priests, agamikas and other employees of their livelihood. More than 98 per cent of the Muzrai temples were financially weak and the employees were unable to earn a square meal, they said.

Mr. Srivatsa demanded that the Government either pay US$110 a month as salary on a par with the group d employees or return the lands so that they could use the proceeds from the land for maintaining

INDIA, May 15, 2012 (The Hindu): A statue was installed in honor of Chitra Tirunal, in Chennai, for enabling temple access to all Hindus. Chitra Tirunal Bala Rama Varma was the last ruler of Travancore. He became ruler at the age of 12, his aunt Setu Lakshmi Bayi serving as the regent. In 1930, he became 'maharajah' in his own right and ruled till 1947.

A saintly man, whose devotion to the deity of Ananthapadmanabhaswami was legendary, his reign was marked by several enlightened acts.

One of the most acclaimed steps taken by the maharajah was the Temple Entry Proclamation of 1936, which opened temples in Travancore to all Hindus, irrespective of caste. In its time it was a path-breaking measure and praised by many, including Mahatma Gandhi. In a way, it marked the culmination of the Vaikkom Satyagraha launched with similar aims in the 1920s by Periyar E.V. Ramaswami Naicker. Chitra Tirunal was feted and honored, and in Madras, public appreciation manifested into a statue.

UNITED STATES, May, 2012 (RNS): President Obama's recent endorsement of same-sex marriage opened a torrent of speculation on what his newly enunciated position will mean politically, but the latest polls indicate the public largely backs his views and that his stance may not hurt him at the ballot box.

A Gallup poll in early May showed that by a 54-42 percent margin, American adults consider gay and lesbian relations "morally acceptable." The level of approval has grown steadily since 2002, when it stood at 38 percent, so much so that Gallup considers the current situation "the new normal" in U.S. public opinion.
